Why Proper Semen Thawing Makes All the Difference in FTAI Results

04-17-2026

In artificial insemination, every step matters — and semen thawing is one of the most critical, although it is often underestimated. Temperature differences, uneven heating, imprecise or unsuitable equipment, and poor handling conditions can compromise the viability of the genetic material and directly affect pregnancy rates. In this article, you will learn about the main challenges associated with traditional thawing methods and discover the technological solutions that are raising the bar for precision, safety, and reliability in herd reproductive management.

NON-UNIFORM WATER HEATING vs. UNIFORM HEATING

MARKET CHALLENGE: In general, semen thawers currently available on the market do not heat the water evenly. Heat spreads slowly through the water, creating hot and cold spots inside the container. This greatly worsens temperature control, since the thermostat and sensor are usually fixed at a single point. Internal temperature differences within the container can reach several degrees Celsius.

LICHT SOLUTION: In the WP-100, the container, its material, and its shape—as well as the heating element, temperature sensor, and software—have been specially designed to ensure uniform water temperature at all times, regardless of the ambient temperature. The water heats evenly throughout the entire container, with no variation between hot and cold spots.

THERMOSTAT vs. ELECTRONIC CONTROL

MARKET CHALLENGE: Many thawers currently available on the market rely on thermostats for temperature control. By definition, thermostats are imprecise and unsuitable for such an important function. Because they are mechanical bimetallic devices, thermostats switch their contacts on and off with a temperature gap of several degrees, allowing the water temperature to fluctuate significantly.

As a result, the water temperature swings between excessively high values (after the thermostat opens) and excessively low values (after it closes), which is unsuitable for the process and can lead to semen loss. These deviations become even more pronounced due to factors such as ambient temperature variation, thermostat position inside the container, water volume, construction material, and container shape.

In addition, on some farms, semen is still thawed without the use of any device at all, resulting in losses to the producer’s investment.

LICHT SOLUTION: The WP-100 incorporates advanced microprocessor-based electronic temperature control with high precision, ensuring stable temperature maintenance inside the container in cold environments (0°C), hot environments (34°C), and even underwater.

The correct positioning of the heating element and temperature sensor, combined with the material and structural design of the container, ensures uniform temperature distribution with no hot or cold spots.

It is worth noting that engineering is Licht’s core strength. For this reason, the device is factory-calibrated using temperature standards verified by IPT (the Institute for Technological Research). This is the same instrumentation Licht uses to calibrate its industrial products, which must always be verified in official laboratories certified by INMETRO through RBC (the Brazilian Calibration Network).

THERMOMETER vs. TEMPERATURE SENSOR

MARKET CHALLENGE: Many thawers are not supplied with thermometers. Others use separate thermometers that, when placed in the water, measure the temperature at only one specific point, which changes from one reading to the next. Even digital thermometers often present significant inaccuracies and commonly lack calibration certificates.

In addition to the serious drawback of temperature deviation, thermometers are also subject to damage, breakage, loss, battery failure, and other issues. This means the user always runs the risk of not having a thermometer available when it is needed most.

LICHT SOLUTION: The WP-100 eliminates the need for thermometers by incorporating a precision temperature sensor located directly in the container, calibrated using standards verified by IPT and traceable to INMETRO.

The precise values measured and processed by sophisticated software are displayed on a liquid crystal display with 0.1°C resolution. In other words, the user has access to a reading that is at least ten times more precise than what the process actually requires.

1°C PER MINUTE vs. 3°C PER MINUTE

MARKET CHALLENGE: Most thawers on the market heat water at a rate of approximately 1°C per minute, making the insemination process slower and less reliable.

LICHT SOLUTION: The WP-100 offers fast heating thanks to its high-power 50 W power supply, capable of increasing the water temperature at a rate of up to 3°C per minute.

FRAGILE STRUCTURE vs. ROBUST HOUSING

MARKET CHALLENGE: When transported under adverse conditions and used in dusty or humid environments, many thawers available on the market are easily damaged due to their fragile construction, both in the housing and in the electronics. In addition, their usually dark color makes cleaning more difficult.

LICHT SOLUTION: Licht’s thawer has been built with exceptional care: it is attractive, well-finished, and backed by sophisticated engineering that goes beyond what would normally be required. Its light-colored finish makes cleaning easier. Its robust housing is fully waterproof and resistant to occasional drops. In addition, the equipment is supplied in a high-quality carrying case.

SHORT SERVICE LIFE vs. LONG SERVICE LIFE

MARKET CHALLENGE: Many thawers available on the market have a very short service life due to the harsh conditions of use and transport, requiring frequent replacement.

LICHT SOLUTION: The WP-100 has been designed for long service life, provided that the recommended conditions of use are respected. Its oversized heating electronics allow the power supply, after the heating phase, to operate at no more than 5 W, which corresponds to only 10% of its nominal capacity (50 W), helping to prevent overloading and extend equipment life.

TRAINING-DEPENDENT vs. INTUITIVE OPERATION

MARKET CHALLENGE: Many thawers currently available require more careful training of the employees who handle them on a daily basis.

LICHT SOLUTION: The WP-100 features a simple control panel with three intuitive buttons—easier to use than a mobile phone. Online training is sufficient for operating the equipment, but whenever questions arise, our support team is always ready to help.

By confirming that you watched the training video, you can extend your warranty to 12 months.
